Disabled Bodies Are Not “Fun Facts”

Reminder to able‐bodied allies: our bodies are not an interesting fact for you to share at parties. If you’re saying things like “Oh, my [brother, friend, partner also [experiences, deals with, has] [some fact about how their body works]”, that’s an invasion of privacy.

The number of conversations I have been in with folks (especially parents) who just freely talk about disabled peoples’ bodily functions or, worse yet, think they have a right to ask other disabled people about theirs, is just staggering.

Your proximity to a disabled person doesn’t give you the right to divulge their medical history or diagnosis and it sure as hell doesn’t give you the right to ask other disabled people to divulge theirs.
